Preceptor Training

Factors that Augment Preceptor Quality and Improve Student Clinical Experience

Most programs struggle with finding qualified preceptors for the nurse practitioner students. Critical issues of diversity, multiculturalism, and access to health care services should be integrated into all aspects of the BSN-DNP curriculum including individual courses and intensive educational experiences. The inclusion of diversity and multiculturalism will instill in the student the values of the college and the desire to serve the underserved in community health centers and rural areas.

While educating students is important it is equally important to train preceptors. The preceptor experiences support students. Yet, preceptor growth and development within their new roles is also essential. To support preceptors we are developing modules that can be used to help them understand what a student should know and how to assess the student. In our efforts, we identified six areas for special attention for our students. The student topics also correspond to meeting the professional development needs and challenges within the preceptor experience. As modules are completed they will be added.

These modules are meant for public use. We welcome anyone to use or adapt them. We also welcome the addition of any modules that others would like to contribute.
